This music was inspired by the performance of the folklore storytellers in the mountain area of Yunnan province on my visit to China in 1985. I was deeply touched by their extremely expressive way of storytelling, mostly tragic, in a form mixed with speaking and singing. The undulating melodic line is frequently punctuated by sudden pulses and gestures carried on between moods of vociferation and supplication. In trying to recapture all that mystical narrative, I have also attempted to formulate an artificial mode based on pentatonic scale characteristic of the melodic and harmonic resource for the music.
